The property-casualty (re)insurance sector delivered a strong year in 2025, with the majority of tracked stocks posting positive total returns. This interactive visualization provides a comprehensive view of performance across the universe of publicly traded P&C insurers.

2025 total returns

The chart below displays total returns (price appreciation plus dividends) for 52 P&C (re)insurance stocks. Returns are sorted from highest to lowest, with green bars indicating positive returns and red bars indicating negative returns.

Key observations

Top performers: Heritage Insurance Holdings (HRTG) led the pack with an extraordinary +141.8% return, followed by insurtech Lemonade (LMND) at +94.1% and Spain’s Mapfre (MAP.MC) at +83.3%. The top performers were dominated by personal lines carriers that successfully navigated rate increases and improved underwriting results.

Sector breadth: Of the 52 stocks tracked, 40 (77%) posted positive returns while only 12 (23%) finished the year in negative territory. This broad participation suggests favorable conditions across the P&C sector.

Bottom performers: Kemper Corp (KMPR) was the worst performer at -37.5%, followed by AMERISAFE (AMSF) at -20.8% and Bowhead Specialty (BOW) at -19.7%. Several specialty carriers faced headwinds from loss cost inflation and competitive pressures.

Market leaders: Major insurers like Travelers (TRV), Chubb (CB), and AIG all posted solid double-digit returns, demonstrating that scale and diversification continued to be rewarded by investors.
